Where it all comes from

This original game is my take on solving a design problem present on almost all board games: the complexity of rules. Motif is one of the culminations of my decade-long experience as a UX Designer in the casual gaming industry.

As a fan of strategic games, I wanted to create an attractive puzzle without the war-like structure of Chess but with the same depth and elegance. Moreover, I wanted something as easy to learn as tic-tac-toe but with incredibly challenging outcomes.

I want to make a game such that the rules aren’t the friction to interact with other people.

Origin Story

Coming up with the perfect formula for Motif took some time. I spent countless hours taking inspiration from Go, Letterpress, Hearthstone, and heaps of casual video games from 2048 to Candy Crush.

Taking in factors such as rules and logic, pawn movements, grid dimensions, and square sizes, I was able to craft arguably one of the most inclusive and design-centric games of this generation.

In Motif, anyone can play regardless of their age, the language they speak, their gender, or their physical abilities. It is a well-thought-out game where players maneuver to coexist, move to survive, and scramble to solve.
